The project ā€œBe Scientist!ā€ aims at promoting the scientific literacy among secondary school students by launching an innovative, longer-term program based on the use of hands-on and multimedia tools in the context of Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE).
The second project edition will span through most of the 2016/2017 school year, addressing the main topic of Biotechnology (which became recently part of the last year secondary school curricula) applied to the study of Stem Cells and Neuroscience research.

The main project goals are:

      • Launching an innovative, long-term activity involving science educators, scientists and schools at the national level
      • Promoting the use of multimedia and digital technologies in the context of science education
      • Supporting teachers and schools in the implementation of IBSE to promote collective, critical and individual learning experiences
      • Promoting students’ digital skills and their ability to interpret and asses the reliability of the scientific information provided by the Media

The project has been officially inaugurated by a 3-day intensive Opening Workshop targeted to participating science teachers, each accompanied by one student, held on the 28-30 September 2016 at the headquarters of the EMBL – Monterotondo (Rome).

The project activities will be connected to the most prominent international events in terms of dissemination of scientific knowledge about stem cells (the Unistem Day) and neuroscience (the Brain Awareness Week), where the students involved in the project will have a keyĀ role in moderating a discussion with the participating scientists and presenting their video produced in the frame of the project.

Finally, the most important element of innovation of this second edition is the introduction of a conclusive Summer School for the most motivated students, in response to a specific request of consolidating the basic laboratory skills in the field of life sciences. The Summer School is planned to take place within the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) international Campus in May 2017.
