The Workshop “Educate on Science: A Learning Experience on Life Sciences” officially launched the school projects proposed by our Association for the 2015/2016 school year.
For the first time, the traditional format of teacher training has been enriched by the presence of one student for each participating teacher. This has allowed the creation of a working group made of students and teachers belonging to different schools and regions that facilitated the project implementation and fostered remote collaboration among teachers and students during the school year.
The Workshop proposed theoretical and practical activities on the main scientific topics of the projects (Neuroscience and Stem Cell research) and on the methodologies implemented.
Over 3 days, teachers and students have been involved in:
– Scientific sessions: the scientific topics have been presented through lectures given by expert researchers (Alessandro Rosa – Sapienza University, for Stem Cells and Cornelius Gross – EMBL, and Silvia Mandillo – CNR, for Neuroscience) practical activities on cell biology and interactive demonstrations/simulations.
– Sessions on methodologies: the Inquiry-Based methodology implemented in our projects has been introduced by Mariada Muciaccia (University of Camerino) through a theoretical presentation followed by a practical demonstration. Moreover teachers and students have been involved in role plays and simulations aimed at demonstrating the educational value of the new didactic methodologies based on interactive and collective learning.
– Sessions on science communication: this is a new module that we have introduced in our training activities, having noticed the troubles that teachers and students encounter when they try to interpret and collect scientific information through the media. We invited science communication experts (Federico Ferrazza – Wired Italia, and Sandro Iannaccone – freelance journalist) to help students and teachers understand the process that leads to the publication of science news and provide them with tools to assess their authenticity and reliability.
